Random Thoughts: On the Edge
What is an Edge Data Center? And what makes it different from a standard data center? - Written by Phill Lawson-Shanks, Chief Architect & Vice President of Innovation

Over the past year, the “Edge” has become a major buzz word in the data center industry. But what exactly is the Edge? Where is it located? What is an Edge Data Center? And what distinguishes it from any other facility anywhere else? Well, that all depends on who you ask. Some claim that tier II or tier III markets and the data centers that reside there are at the Edge simply because they are not in a “core market”. Some traditional “core” data center providers claim that they are at the Edge because this is where “they claim” the cloud or content lives. To simplify correctly: the Edge is where you connect with the Internet to access the services that journey across it, and where those service platforms physically exist.
