European interconnection specialist NL-ix established a new PoP at the EdgeConneX Edge Data Center® (EDC) in Amsterdam in April. With peak traffic of 1.7 Tbps and 620+ members, NL-ix is the fifth largest Internet Exchange in the world, but the company does much more with its assets than other Internet Exchanges. Customer can order peering, routing, cloud connection and dedicated transport services, all built on the company’s stable, low-latency, network fabric which interconnects 15 European countries, 25 cities and 105 data centers.

Like EdgeConneX, NL-ix has always been different. Unlike other European exchanges, from its launch in 2002 it offered a range of transport, transit and training services. In those days in Europe, this was seen as undermining the neutrality of an exchange, so there was a Chinese wall built between the ‘pure’ exchange and the more commercial service offerings. But because of this commercial experience, the NL-ix team always had a different vision from the traditional IX – a focus not on metropolitan ‘islands of interconnection’ but on a fully meshed international interconnection fabric.

This approach is paying dividends today. The recent evolution of the Exchange model, and development of new pure play B2B cloud interconnection businesses allowed NL-ix to integrate the two sides of the business.  The synergy between the Internet Exchange and interconnection services is powerful. On the one hand Exchange members drive and benefit from the international distribution and quality of the core network.  On the other hand NL-ix extends the neutrality of its IX approach to customer service, allowing any member anywhere to connect, and offering every form of interconnection. Today, all of this has made NL-ix Europe’s most experienced – and largest – international Interconnect Exchange.

Through new PoPs like the Amsterdam EDC, NL-ix constantly seeks out new low-latency peering and connectivity locations and partners, and they also work constructively with every other internet exchange, in Europe and beyond, adding significantly to peering diversity for EdgeConneX customers.

On September 14 and 15 the Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus in Scheveningen, The Hague will set the stage for the 2nd edition of the Neutral Peering Days. This two-day conference focused on bringing together NL-ix members and the peering community. Register today for the event!
