Creating the Largest Neutral Interconnection Ecosystem in South Europe: DE-CIX to establish new Internet Exchange in Barcelona

Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Barcelona (Spain) – 12 November 2020. Having established the worldwide fastest-growing Internet Exchange (IX) in Madrid in 2016, DE-CIX is taking the Iberian interconnection ecosystem to the next level by setting-up a new full-service interconnection platform in the economic hub of Barcelona. The new IX will serve local eyeballs and key enterprises in Catalonia and beyond. It will be operated under the name of DE-CIX Barcelona. With this latest expansion to Barcelona, DE-CIX – who, in this part of Europe, already operates IXs in Lisbon, Madrid and Marseille, serving domestic markets and establishing new European gateways to South and North America, Africa and Asia – is establishing the largest neutral Interconnection ecosystem in southern Europe. DE-CIX Barcelona will offer interconnection services like peering and private interconnection, along with cloud exchange services through its award-winning Apollon platform, and additional access to top public clouds including Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, and IBM Bluemix.

“We are proud to announce DE-CIX Barcelona today. The city is one of the top 10 economic hubs in Europe by gross domestic product. It truly is an emerging digital hub, with more sea cable landings to be established in the near future that will take the whole Iberian digital ecosystem to a new level. DE-CIX Barcelona will not only be interconnected with one of the world’s largest IXs, DE-CIX Frankfurt, but also with DE-CIX Madrid and Marseille, opening up one of the largest cloud exchanges in the world to enterprises in the region,” says Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX International.

“With DE-CIX Barcelona, we welcome an Internet Exchange to the Catalan city that supports and advances the government’s digitalization strategy in the most professional and promising way. In line with our existing efforts, this IX will be strategic for our digital society and an enrichment for our economy and citizens,” says David Ferrer Canosa, Secretary of Digital Policies from the Catalan Government.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, DE-CIX (German Commercial Internet Exchange) saw the light of day in 1995 in an old post office building in Frankfurt. The aim was to promote global digital interconnection and establish efficient and cost-neutral data exchange via Internet Exchanges. Today, DE-CIX is a very important part of the global Internet infrastructure, with 25 locations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.
