NANOG 63 Education Series Courses Now Open for Registration

February 1, 2015 in San Antonio, TX, Full-Day, Hands-On Programs Offered on ‘Routing Fundamentals’ and ‘IPv6 Routing Fundamentals’

NANOGFREMONT, CA, December 02, 2014 – The North American Network Operators’ Group (NANOG) announces registration is open for its two education courses, ‘Routing Fundamentals’ and ‘IPv6 Routing Fundamentals’, held before NANOG 63, in San Antonio, TX. Both classes are set to take place February 1, 2015 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, collocated with NANOG 63, hosted by CyrusOne at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel.

NANOG Education Series programs are network operational training courses taught by real world operators and designed to equip new and mid-career operators with the knowledge and resources to build a solid professional foundation in the technical skills required to perform in today’s complex Internet operations. The program offers participants the opportunity to network with colleagues, revitalize skills, learn advanced networking techniques and discover new network applications.

The ‘Routing Fundamentals’ class teaches participants best theories and practices behind designing a reliable and stable network that is easier to troubleshoot and maintain.  The course examines the OSI Model, peering negotiations, IGPs and BGPs, as well as the principles and policy associated with routing. Each lecture is followed by a hands-on lab that involves building a basic OSPF network; iBGP with route-reflection; eBGP peering with basic policy; and insights into a negotiated network. NANOG’s returning Instructor David Barak, a Principal Architect for AT&T Consulting, teaches the class. At AT&T Consulting, Mr. Barak is responsible for the design, implementation, and remediation of large and complex secure unicast and multicast networks of AT&T commercial and government customers.  He routinely provides NOC-level training in routing, IPsec, and multicast.

The ‘IPv6 Routing Fundamentals’ course is designed for network and system engineers looking to understand the new features and operational characteristics of networks that include IPv6. The course provides a solid introduction of IPv6, and the foundational knowledge to configure networking software, common operating systems and devices to migrate and support IPv6. Class prerequisites include hands-on experience and/or familiarity with IPv4 including subnetting, bootstrapping, routing, and routing protocols. NANOG’s returning instructor, Brandon Ross, maintains over 15 years of senior, technical management experience in network engineering for leading organizations such as Network Utility Force, Comcast, the University of Florida, Internap, MindSpring, NetRail, Sockeye Networks and Xiocom. Mr. Ross is also a certified IPv6 Forum Gold level engineer.

Each course fee is $200 through February 1, 2015. Attendees may choose the option to add either a one-day attendance pass to NANOG 63 or a full pass for an additional fee. The $200 registration fee includes course materials, a continental breakfast from 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM, a full day of instruction, lunch, snacks and a sponsored evening social where participants can network with Internet industry veterans. Attendees are required to bring their own laptops and will be provided NANOG wireless network connectivity. The NANOG hotel room block also allows for a guaranteed rate for over-night staff should that be needed.

The NANOG educational courses are available to any participant who wishes to register including all NANOG members and attending participants. All programs are posted on the NANOG website at https://www.nanog.org/meetings/education/home.
