In 2018 as in 2017, the Edge Continues to Move Globally

As we welcome in 2018, it’s the perfect time to recap 2017 and share our objectives for the next 12 months. First, a look back at EdgeConneX®.

We now have 31 active Edge Data Centers® (EDC) across 3 continents . We serve the five largest companies by market capitalization and many of the industry’s brightest rising stars. Our average construction time has held at six months per EDC and in 2017 we delivered over 80MWs of fully commissioned space to our customers. Our proudest achievement, however, is that in the history of the business we have never lost a customer. Lastly, in 2017, we added Toronto as a new market.

Looking forward, EdgeConneX plans to be just as ambitious. On January 16, we announced our entry into Argentina. We’re adding 15MWs to our Chicago campus;12MWs to Portland; 10MWs to Atlanta; 20MWs to Amsterdam; 16MWs to Dublin; and are actively looking to expand in more than 10 markets globally.

2018 will be an exciting year for all of us, as we all play in the same expanding world of technology. We are committed to doing our part of the heavy lifting and continuing to be an easy partner to work with that understands your organization’s needs, and welcomes helping you with your challenges.

Sincerely,

Clint Heiden
CCO, EdgeConneX

WHAT’S NEW AT THE EDGE
Embracing the Edge, Globally
As Rhonda Ascierto, Research Director, Datacenters and Critical Infrastructures at 451 Research, wrote in the report Datacenters at the Edge, “The need for datacenter capacity for edge computing and the Internet of Things will lead to new datacenter form factors, as well as new cloud computing and networking approaches. An anticipated wave of new edge capacity will differ in multiple ways from past edge buildouts. Most upcoming edge computing installations will not be incidental or tactical in nature but devised as part of strategic multi-tier IT services architectures.”

ALL ABOUT OUR EUROPEAN REACH
Global Expansion Accelerating into 2018
A major focus in 2017 was on partnerships with our largest customers to identify, select and expand our presence in locations that could support their growth across Europe. This process resulted in the creation of the Edge Data Center (EDC) campus. We rapidly expanded both our Dublin and Amsterdam presence, offering expanded space in additional buildings to accommodate their ever-expanding demand from customers. The EDC campuses in these two countries enable advanced connectivity services across Europe.

NEWS FROM THE EDGE
Security and The Edge
In the wake of increasingly common cyberattacks and security breaches, it’s more important than ever for organizations invested in the storage, delivery or implementation of data to execute robust security measures. As a growing number of enterprises and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) move toward the Edge, EdgeConneX’s Edge Data Centers provide an added layer of security given their proximity to end users and aggregation points as well as their ability to establish widespread redundancy.

Let’s take a look at the various ways that EDCs enhance data security for end users, enterprises, cloud and content providers.

SPOTLIGHT ON…
This month we spoke with Lee Kirby, Co-Founder / Chairman of Salute™ Mission Critical who provided us with insights their partnership with EdgeConneX.
Salute Inc. and EdgeConneX have forged a very productive and successful partnership, placing many of your highly-trained American military veterans in their Edge Data Centers. How has this relationship impacted your business and your team?

The successful partnership with EdgeConneX has been unlike any other. We were given a chance to prove ourselves with EdgeConneX and then we entered a candid conversation with them about how best to leverage our skills in support of their Edge strategy. We feel we reached a mutually beneficial balance because our strength is recruiting, training, deploying and supporting service personnel globally and that is exactly what EdgeConneX needed with its aggressive global growth goals. Growth with EdgeConneX has proven the model and has allowed us to reference the success as we grow with other clients having similar needs. Data centers need a flexible and adaptive staffing model based on client requirements and it’s not a one-size-fits-all model. Together, we have established and proven this highly-effective framework. The fulfilling side for us is that this translates to veterans getting jobs in the industry with the potential of a long-term career.

AT THE EDGE: RANDOM THOUGHTS AND EDGE INSIGHTS:
Random Thoughts
By Phill Lawson-Shanks, Chief Innovation Officer at EdgeConneX®
Access to the Internet and all its myriad services is taken for granted by so many of us in North America and Europe, but for many countries with highly developed economies, this is not the case.

The Internet, with its vast pipes and connected data centers delivering on-demand videos, email, access to your financial services, hosted workspace, etc., are not readily available in South America. There can be access, certainly, but the data and services are delivered via subsea cable on-ramps in Miami and Los Angeles. It’s the same story we saw play out over the past five years in high GDP metro regions that were Internet-poor because they had to pull all their services from a handful of large peering cities.
